"We spend 80% of our time trying to get money! We could be using that to get things moving if we didn't have to seek continual short term funding."

Welcome To Tourism Research Innovation Project

balanceCanada's rural regions are in a time of transition. Many have started to incorporate service based industries such as tourism into social and economic development goals. Communities have struggled in this transition for a number of reasons including a lack of information and resources. While much information exists in businesses, communities, academic institutions, and government agencies much of it remains inaccessible to those who need it.

The Tourism Research and Innovation Project (TRIP) is the first of its kind to address the need for enhanced knowledge exchange in tourism development within rural areas in the province of British Columbia, and is intended to act as a model for similar in rural communities throughout Canada.

Follow the new blog on rural tourism development

BC's first rural tourism conference - mark you calendars!

Over the years as we have travelled from region to region in BC with our students, we have met over 700 community leaders and business operators that shared their experiences in tourism development with the TRIP team. As early as 2007, the Advisory committee for the project agreed that it would be a good idea to host a conference on rural tourism to help bring people together to learn from one another and develop networks thoughout the province. Indeed, when we arrived in a new community, the first question we were asked was "so what are they doing in X community". There are few opportunities for rural leaders and operators to connect with others and learn new strategies that they can bring back to their community. Indeed, this was one of the reasons we took knowledge on the road...
