- Signage and innovation workshops held in 100 Mile House
On March 13 and 14th delegates from rural communities around the province gathered in 100 Mile House for the BC Rural Network Conference. Sessions were diverse spanning issues such as inclusive design, amenity migration and health. The TRIP project hosted two workshops for delegates. One session was on community signage where the importance of good signage was emphasized for tourism development. Tips and best practices were shared based on field observations from the TRIP extension tours. A copy of the presentation can be found here (link to full version pdf).

- Grand Forks discusses diversification through tourism
On March 12th, residents in the boundary region gathered for a one day workshop on economic diversification in Grand Forks.
This event was organized in partnership with Community Futures and the Canadian Rural Partnership (one of the LIRN partners) to generate discussion and action on the issue of diversifying the local economy. The meeting brought together over 30 participants from a wide range of sectors in Grand Forks and surrounding communities. The guest panel was made up of George Penfold, Regional Innovation Chair in Rural Economic Development at Selkirk College, Nicole Vaugeois, Project Coordinator for TRIP and Abra Brynne, who has worked in community development and local food systems for over 25 yeas and is a founding member of BC Food Systems Network.

- Heritage Tourism: In Search of the Authentic - A Great Success!
The Heritage Tourism: In Search of the Authentic Workshop hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts on Feb 15th at the downtown SFU campus was a great success. Approximately 80 delegates attended and learned about trends impacting heritage tourism, best practices and resources from Tourism BC and the Ministry of Tourism Sport and the Arts, Heritage Branch. In the afternoon, delegates did a "Heritage Tourism Readiness Quiz" in the afternoon to identify areas where they can take action in their own communities. A workshop for planners, consultants and provincial and local government officials. The Kootenay region is experiencing what is a globally expanding, and unprecedented phenomenon * in-migration and new development with a focus on natural amenities.
This is largely based on a shift of people and equity from urban housing markets in the Lower Mainland, Alberta, Ontario, the U.S. and internationally.
In the Kootenay region, this has resulted in new *resort* type initiatives in Rossland, Revelstoke, Golden and Invermere for example, migration to existing communities such as Nelson, Creston and Cranbrook, and dispersed rural development on larger lots, especially on or near water.- Read More»
