BC Rural Network Conference - March 13 - 15th in 100 Mile House

"Building Communities Together" will be an opportunity for rural residents, and representatives of rural organizations from across the province to come together to discuss ways to coordinate their efforts to improve networking and build the capacity of rural communities in BC.

Supporting Aboriginal Tourism Development with the Mowachaht Muchalaht First Nations

From February 24 to 29th a team from Malaspina University-College worked with the First Nations communities near Gold River (Mowachaht and Muchalaht) on a participatory rural appraisal to support tourism development.  The Bands invited TRIP to conduct the study after being introduced by staff at the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts.  While in the community, the team conducted site visits to Yuquot and the Marina, talked with band members, operators and community residents in Gold River, analysed secondary documents and maps of the area. TRIP profiled in new book on knowledge mobilization

kmb bookThe Tourism Research Innovation Project (TRIP) is one of eleven projects funded across Canada as a pilot for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. Each project uses unique strategies to move research knowledge into society so that it has greater impact.

To promote the "Knowledge in Society" programme, a book entitled "Knowledge Mobilization in the Social Sciences and Humanities: Moving from Research to Action" has just been released by MQI Press. The book provides a thorough overview of knowledge mobilization and an appendix with hundreds of ways that researchers can share knowledge in ways that impact society.

Fort St James learns about destination branding

meeting at Fort St JamesOn December 7th, approximately 20 community leaders from Fort St. James met with faculty from the TRIP project to learn about destination branding.  Nicole Vaugeois (Malaspina), Pamela Wright (UNBC), Trish Jacques (CNC) and Diane Kutzner (UNBC graduate student) facilitated a day long session at the College of New Caledonia Campus. The meeting was coordinated as part of the Rural Secretariat's LIRN initiative.  Those attending were introduced to basics on destination branding and worked through some of the initial stages before developing an action plan.  A full report was compiled on the day.
