Signage plays such an important role in connecting visitors to experiences (or product) and yet in many rural BC communities, signage is non existent or confusing.

Gem of the Gulf: Hornby Island's effort to plan and manage tourism

One of the case studies completed by TRIP last year was on the community development efforts of the residents of Hornby Island to manage the tourism industry that already exists on their island. Unlike many communities in British Columbia that are seeking to develop tourism, some, like Hornby Island is looking for potential strategies to manage tourism for the social, environmental and economic health of the island.

With a year round population of approximately 950 people, and a summer population of anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 people, Hornby Island has clearly identified the type of visitors they want. TRIP helps fund student based community planning project in Golden, BC

During the week of Feb. 26 to March 4, seven students from the Recreation and Tourism Management program at Malaspina University-College took their knowledge of tourism planning on the road to Golden B.C. These fourth year students had the opportunity to work alongside community planner and former graduate of the Malaspina program, Cleo Corbett.

The seven students were invited by Ms. Corbett and the town of Golden to participate in the process of creating a new official community plan (OCP). Critical Success Factors for Rural Tourism Development

Outside of British Columbia, much attention has been paid to the complexities of developing tourism in rural areas. Some of these insights may assist communities in our province to assemble the right mix of partners and strategies to enhance tourism. According to researchers Suzanne Wilson and her colleagues there are 10 critical success factors to rural tourism development.
